EOA: Few LNG Tankers Pass Through the Suez Canal, None Through the Red Sea
Summary
Houthi attacks on tankers, starting late 2023 and intensifying in 2024, reduced LNG carriers passing through the Suez Canal to only those delivering to Egypt and Jordan. One large Omani LNG tanker to Turkey passed and returned, and a small Chinese carrier transited.
Shipments fell from about 10% of global LNG exports to under 2%, as shown in Figure 1, which plots monthly LNG volumes through the Canal against the percentage of total global LNG exports.
