Chart of the Day: Canada’s Planned LNG Projects

Summary

Figure (1) above shows Canada’s LNG projects with their capacity and the timeline for them to come online.

Currently, there are eight LNG export projects across Canada at different stages of development. While there are also some operating LNG plants (small to micro scale facilities), they are running at very low rates to address domestic demand in the industrial sector, maritime transport, mining, and some remote communities.

Among the eight projects under development, six have been granted export licenses for periods between 25 and 40 years to export up to 47.1 million tons per annum (mtpa) by 2028-2030. Such projects are meant for large scale LNG exports to the global market. They are all located in the coastal British Columbia province (BC). Indeed, BC’s proximity to gas resources in Canada, as well as to key demand centers in Asia, makes it an attractive location for LNG projects. The normal journey of an LNG vessel departing from the western coast of BC to the Asian market would take only 8-10 days.
