Commentary:
As several European countries reduced their purchases of piped Russian natural gas, they significantly increased imports of Russian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Figure (1) above shows the top importers of Russian LNG in January and February 2023 compared to imports during the same period last year. The chart reveals a sharp increase in LNG imports into Belgium (75%) and Spain (250%).
France’s LNG imports from Russia are also noteworthy, but they have been lower than the amount recorded in 2022 by 28%. This drop has been the result of the labor strikes throughout France which have halted operations at key LNG terminals, an issue that we discussed previously in the Daily Energy Report and the weekly EOA newsletter.
