Bloomberg: Taiwan Aims to Triple US Share of LNG to Avoid Tariffs
Summary
Taiwan plans to triple its share of US LNG imports to 30% over the next decade as part of a broader $200 billion increase in US purchases. The move aims to reduce its trade surplus with the US and gain favor amid President Trump’s tariff push. Taiwan currently gets about 10% of its LNG from the US, with most supply coming from Australia and Qatar.
Figure (1) shows trends in Taiwan’s LNG imports by country of origin. Despite an increase in 2024, the overall imports are stable around 1.7 mt per month.
Most of Taiwan’s LNG comes from Australia and Qatar. That makes perfect sense given the distance and the cost of shipping. Although the US comes in third, we should be careful with the announcement that Taiwan will triple its LNG imports from the US.
